Tips for Drafting a Letter to the Editor or Column

• DO be brief, but informed
• DO respond to a recent article in the publication
• DO follow the paper or magazine's submission guidelines (see above for local publication's guidlines)
• DO focus on one topic
• DO highlight how the audience/readers will be affected by the issue
• DO inform the audience how they can get involved (join LOBA!)
• DO use factual data to support your points
• DO take the time to verify facts you provide
• DO spell and grammar check your letter
• DON'T send your email letter as an attachment or include any other attachments 
• DON'T insult, exaggerate or use vulgar language 
• DON'T use bold font or all caps to emphasize a word or phrase
